A ten-year-old boy was allegedly raped by five men between the ages of 14 and 21 years old at an open space in Welkom on Sunday afternoon.
According to police spokesperson, Mamello Mokhuoane, a case of five counts of rape was registered for further investigation after it is alleged that the 10-year-old boy was swimming with his friends in a pond without clothes when they were approached by five unknown men wearing blankets walking with dogs.
The boy’s friends managed to run away but he was stuck in the pond and the men caught up with him. They allegedly made the boy hold on to a pole whilst raping him. After the ordeal, the boy fled the scene and reported the, matter where he was then rushed to a hospital for further examinations. The police were summoned to the scene.
The only one considered to be an adult among the five suspects, a 21-year-old male suspect, was arrested on Monday following police investigations. The other four suspects, who are minors aged between 14 and 16, were also arrested but later released into the custody of their parents as they are underage.
The 21-year-old, man who is still in custody, will appear on 1 February 2017 at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, the four minors will meet with social workers as part of a preliminary investigation.
The five men, who the victim described as “men wearing blankets”, were initially believed to be Lesotho nationals, however, it was found that they are all South African citizens.
Mokhuoane says the police suspect that the alleged perpetrators are initiation school graduates, which would explain the reason why they were wearing blankets, however, this has not yet been confirmed.
The boy, who is reported to be traumatised and did not even want the rape examiners to assess him, was since released from the hospital.
