The Department of Water and Sanitation in the Free State, Bloem Water and the Mangaung Metro have jointly confirmed that water supply in Bloemfontein and the surrounding areas is not contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
This comes after widespread claims on social media that the metro’s drinking water is contaminated and is not safe to drink.

Metro spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, says drinking water meets the standards set by the South African National Standards (Sans).

He says a process was facilitated by stakeholders to test water quality immediately, although routine testing of drinking water quality takes place continuously. Experts took part in the process.

The metro was satisfied with the results of the water tests conducted. Water is safe for consumption. He says the metro does not know where the allegations originated from, but the metro will continuously engage with communities on the quality of water being provided. The metro and other stakeholders don’t want to make the mistake of providing water that is not safe to consumers. – Christal-Lize Muller
