The Free State had a 44% voter turnout for the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the province says they received the final figures earlier today.

The IEC’s provincial spokesperson, Mmathabo Rasengane, believes this is fairly good as they were expecting a turnout of 45%.

More than 600 000 people voted in the province.

Results are still being counted, but the results of three municipalities – Koffiefontein, Ladybrand and Reitz – have been captured already.

“My colleagues are doing fairly well. Results are quickly coming in. We don’t know who is leading where yet.  Right now, we are only focusing on capturing the results,” she says.
