Virginia warders out on bail

Two Virginia Correctional Services prison warders, allegedly involved in the murder of a housebreaking suspect, must be back in the local Magistrate’s Court on January 12.

According to Free State police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, the two warders were released on bail of R1 500 each on Friday.

Mbambo says a case of murder was opened after the 24-year-old Meloding resident died in hospital early Thursday morning after allegedly being beaten by the two men. The victim was reportedly trying to break into one of the houses at the Correctional Service centre, after which a chase ensued and warning shots were fired.

Police spokesperson, Malebo Khosana, last week confirmed that the police found four empty cartridges near the hall where the suspect was held. He said a post-mortem must still be conducted in order to determine the cause of death.

The deceased was a parolee who was under supervision for an earlier housebreaking incident in Virginia.
