Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, has urged road users to abide by the law and drive cautiously during the festive season.

Speaking at the provincial road safety launch in Parys this morning, Mashinini said more traffic law enforcers will be deployed on all provincial roads. He says they will be tough on drivers who are caught without valid drivers’ licences.

Mashinini says more than ten illegal immigrants have already been arrested this morning.

“The main purpose is to ensure that when people enter the province they are safe. We want law-abiding drivers, we are talking to them. We are appealing to them. We also deal with those who do not have the necessary permits and drivers’ licence. We will apprehend them”.

“We want to have a peaceful festive season. We can’t have people who do not abide by the law on our roads” he added.

Mashinini urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy. He says they will also be tough on drivers who drink and drive, as well as those who text and drive. He adds that crime prevention and measures taken to ensure road safety, will be extended beyond the festive season.
