Paramedics arrived at the first accident about two kilometres out of Harrismith and found a taxi that was torn apart, no other vehicle was found at the scene. Speculation from the scene indicates that the taxi could have been struck by a truck.

After medics triaged the injured it was found that a two-month-old-baby and the driver of the taxi tragically died on impact, ten other commuters sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor. The injured were treated at the scene before medics transported them to a Harrismith hospital for further care.

Another ambulance from Netcare 911 and vehicles from the provincial services went to the second taxi accident about two kilometres from the first one. Reports from the scene indicate that the taxi was travelling from Kokstad to an unknown destination in the Free State when they slammed into the rear of a truck.

After the patients were examined it was found that 14 people sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor. The injured were treated at the scene before medics transported them to a hospital in Harrismith for the care that they required.
