Investigations ensure successful conviction & sentencing of three young rapists


The Selosesha FCS (family violence, child protection and sexual offences) Unit Detectives have made it their point that they will ensure that they thoroughly investigate cases in order to convict and sentence criminals particularly rapist.

Three rapists were sentenced for raping a 21-year-old mentally disturbed victim between 10 and 14 November in 2014.

The trio met the victim who was on her way to her home in Section L at about 18:00 that evening.

Police say they took her to one of the rapist’s abandoned shack in his home in Section L in a statement issued on today.

A friend of the three told his mother about the ordeal after finding out about it and the mother told the victim’s mother, who reported the matter to the police.

A case of rape was opened for investigation and assigned to Selosesha FCS detective, Manyatso Rakaku. She managed to apprehend the trio but they were released into their parents’ custody as they were still minors.

On the 23 November 2016 the trio namely Thami Mbelekane (20), Sechaba Masilo (20) and Mpho Ramosebi (19) were found guilty of rape and were sentenced on the 2 December 2016 by Botshabelo Regional Court.

All three were sentenced to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for rape.

Thorough investigation that involved the investigating officer and the Social Workers from Department of Social Development ensured that the rapists were convicted.

Free State Police Provincial Commissioner, Lebeoana Tsumane, applauded the investigating officer for working together with other state departments in particular Social Development in order to convict rapists.
