Former Bafana Bafana captain, Aaron Mokoena, was born in Boipatong, Johannesburg, on 25 November 1980.
Mokoena played for local teams such as Jomo Cosmos earlier in his career before he went abroad.
Nicknamed ‘Mbazo’ (axe is Zulu) for his rugged defending in his heyday, he also played for Ajax Amsterdam, KRC Gent, Blackburn Rovers and he captained Portsmouth.
Mbazo is the most capped South African footaller and is the only one to exceed over 100 appearances to Bafana Bafana.
Mokoena was the youngest player ever to represent South Africa at one point. He was only 19 when he played in 1999 at the 2000 Olympic qualifiers.
