Today, 54 years ago, Nelson Mandela was arrested

The former South African statesman’s prison term began when he was arrested in Cedara, a small town near Howick, in KwaZulu-Natal, in 1962.

He was apprehended soon after returning from a six-month covert trip through Africa and London where he gathered support for the African National Congress’ armed wing, Umkhonto weSizwe (MK).

He was charged with leaving the country without a passport and inciting workers to strike.
