The parents of the Academy of Excellence learner, who got rough-handled in a video that went viral last week, has laid a criminal charge.
The parents, whose names are known but withheld to protect the learner, told Bloemfontein Courant in an exclusive interview that they have laid the charge against the teacher.
The teacher from the Academy of Excellence – a private school in Heidedal, Bloemfontein features in a video that went viral on the internet.
It shows how he roughs-up the Grade7 learner in front of a packed classroom.
The cellphone video was taken by a co-learner.
Free State police spokesperson, Sinah Mpakane, has confirmed that a case has been opened at Batho police office.
She says the police are investigating a case of common assault.
She says no one has been arrested as yet.
Chairperson of the School Governing Board, Hansie Engelbrecht, earlier said the teacher involved in the incident has been placed on suspension.
The Free State Department of Education has commended the school for taking action by suspending the teacher.
Meanwhile the parents of the boy spoke out on the incident.
