Ans Botha has received arguably the highest accolade as a coach on the world athletics stage by being named as the 2017 IAAF Coach of the Year.
The coach of the 400m world record holder, Olympic gold medallist and two-time IAAF World Championships gold medallist, Wayde van Niekerk, has received some well-deserved recognition for her outstanding work with the Bloemfontein sprinter.
Van Niekerk himself is line for a top award after making the shortlist for the IAAF Athlete of the Year. After his performance during the World Championship in London earlier his year, the shy and humble sprinter has been tipped to receive award this year after being nominated last year as well.
Van Niekerk is currently recovering from knee surgery, after injury his knee in a game of touch rugby. The injury has ruled his out of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
