The Free State’s top achieving matric learner for 2016 is from Sentraal Secondary School in Bloemfontein. The 18-year-old, Johan Champion, achieved eight distinctions in the subjects. Physical Science, Life Orientation, English First Additional Language, German Second Additional Language, Accounting, Life Sciences, Maths and Afrikaans Home Language. MEC of Education Tate Makgoe named Champion the province’s top performer during a media conference in the city earlier. Sentraal’s headmaster, Johan Vorster, says Champion is a true champ who worked hard.
He says Champion consistently achieved an average of 95%. It was expected that he would be among the top achievers in the province, says Vorster. “The school is grateful for his (Champion’s) achievement and is also proud of him.”

Eunice Girl’s High School in Bloemfontein also achieved the highest performance rate for Accounting and Maths.
Oranje Girl’s School walked away with the top honours for Physical Science. The Northern Cape’s top achiever is is Emeleo Duister off Northern Cape High.
Champion was also earlier named the dux pupil Sentraal High School. His final results look like this: Physical Science (99%), Life Orientation (98%), English First Additional Language (97%), German Second Additional Language (96%), Accounting (95%), Life Sciences (94%), Maths (93%) and Afrikaans Home Language (92%). – Christal-lize Muller & Maricelle Botha
