The senior police officials who have been arrested because of fraud allegations have been granted R5 000 bail each.
Seven police officials from separate units, including the Tactical Response Team (TRT), Public Order Police (POP) including a Finance admin clerk, as well as a Bloemfontein business consultant, all made their first court appearance before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (1 Feb).
Mpho Selesho, Litaba Dodo, Mokale Madumise, Jacob Mokheti, Moratoe Motsoeneng, Patrick Sedio and Klaas Sereco are all facing charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.
Jack Tladi, a business consultant who was arrested along with the police officers also received R5 000 bail. According to Hawks spokesperson, Philane Nkwalase, Tladi was implicated in the case after he had received certain amounts of money under the pretences of business transactions.
State Prosecution said charges of racketeering would be added at a later stage.
The suspects allegedly made fraudulent transactions to the value of more than R5.2 million between April 2015 and September 2016.
Tladi (54), who is a businessman residing in Woodlands, Bloemfontein, has been released on condition that he report to the Hawks’ Anti-Corruption Investigative (ACI) Unit every Monday between 8am and 8pm and he may not leave the Mangaung Magisterial District without reporting to this office first.
The seven police officers were released on condition that they report to the Hawks’ ACI Unit, should they go outside the Mangaung Magisterial District.
The suspects’ next court appearance will be on March 3.
