Radical economic transformation should be moving beyond mere share ownership schemes.

This is one of the issues President Jacob Zuma mentioned during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

Political analyst, Amanda Gouws, says this topic was expected to be raised and the country might see a more hasty approach of its implementation through various empowerment programmes.

“The president said there will be greater state involvement in the economy but I think what is happening is that there will be an acceleration of this. There will be an acceleration of affirmative action. We will see a more speedy delivery on, for example, 30% of black ownership in construction,” she says.

President Zuma said the government’s efforts for radical economic transformation need to move beyond words and it is time to act.

He added that there can be no sustainability in any economy where the majority is excluded.
