Six more people have succumbed to their injuries from yesterday’s taxi and bakkie accident on the R726 between Zastron and Sterkspruit.
According to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, Tammy Marwick, two more people from the taxi died, while 4 more from the bakkie died.
It was discovered that the two that were in the taxi were in fact dead but the bodies were buried beneath the bodies of others that were in the carnage. In the bakkie, at the back, four people died, and according to Marwick, the four were a father and his three children. The mother of the family, who was also at the back of the bakkie, was flown to a hospital in Bloemfontein for treatment on her injuries and she is said to be in a critical state.
Marwick says the forensic department from the South African Police Services will now need to take DNA samples of the deceased as a mean of identifying them as they were burnt beyond recognition.
Provincial Health MEC, Butana Kompela and Head of Department, David Motau, have expressed his shock at this horrific accident. The MEC has also sent his condolences to the families of the deceased.
