The names of the two men who died in the ambulance that overturned on the N1 north of Bloemfontein on New Year’s Day have been released.

Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Department of Health, said the two men were Tshepo Moshapo (37) and Dimpho Maoko (22). Mvambi says Maoko, who is originally from Giyani, Limpopo, will be laid to rest at his hometown on the 7th of January, while it is not clear when Mahoko, who was from Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, will be buried.

Mvambi says despite the uncertainty with regards to Mahoko’s funeral arrangements, he believes the funeral will also be during this coming weekend. Meanwhile, Peter Kareli, police spokesperson, who says he was on standby when the accident took place on the N1 and rushed to the scene, says determining the cause of accident will not be a light task as the vehicle had not crashed into another vehicle and there were no witnesses to account.

While he says investigations are ongoing, the cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Free State MEC for Health, Butana Kompela, has conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and has also expressed his sadness and shock regarding the accident.
