The Mustangs Wheelchair Rugby Club travelled from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg with the intent on capturing their first national title the weekend in the SA South Africa Wheelchair Rugby League Finals. They have been unbeaten this season and one more victory would do the trick for the Bloemfonteiners.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was their inspirational captain, Jared McIntyre, who founded the club in 2010.
Playing Mandeville in the final this weekend, the Mustangs fell behind early and then lost national team player Musa Simelane for almost a quarter when his chair broke. They were seven points down when Musa returned in the third quarter, but the Mustangs quickly turned it around, which seemed to dishearten Mandeville. “Their whole demeanour changed when we caught up so quickly,” says McIntyre. The final score was 46-40 for the Mustangs.
“To come back from seven points down to win by six points in two quarters was a great effort,” says McIntyre. – Brad Morgan
