A grade 12 learner from Welkom in the Free State, who returned from his matric farewell, was allegedly murdered for his clothing. This comes after the body of 17-year-old Diponki Mohatlane was found by a security guard patrolling the area behind a chain store in the city centre more than a week ago. Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says the deceased faced upwards. His body was covered in blood.
He says Mohatlane sustained multiple stab wounds on the left side of his upper body. It is believed that a sharp object was used in the attack. Mohatlane was declared dead on the scene. His mother later identified his body. Thakeng says police suspect the motive for the murder might have been robbery as Mohatlane’s trousers and shoes were missing.
After the murder he only had a T-shirt and underwear on. No arrests have been made. Thakeng appeals to anyone with information to assist police.
He says at this stage nothing else is missing. The investigation continues. – Christal-Lize Muller
