The management of hospitals in the Free State is one of the provincial treasury’s biggest concern. This is according Finance MEC, Elzabe Rockman.
The Free State Health Department has been under care for more than year since it has been put under administration.
Rockman says although the department is in a much more stable condition, the management of hospitals needs urgent attention. She was reacting to several damning reports about the state of health care in the province.
At least four hospitals – Universitas, Pelonomi, Dr J.S Moroka and Bongani Hospitals – have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Rockman says the mere size of the health department is a challenge.
“What we are not completely convinced we have done is to duplicate or create the same financial stability in the hospitals. The department’s Bophela House here is one thing but to recreate or duplicate that same financial management stability at hospitals is a different thing. That is where more of our focus are going to be on,” she said.
