The Stormers and Western Province scrumhalf, Herschel Jantjies, is set for his Guinness Pro14 debut on Saturday when Scarlets face the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
The defending champions have somewhat of an injury crises in their already depleted squad which is touring South Africa.
Last week Johnathan Evans injured his ankle during their hard fought 34-30 win over the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth.
Scarlets also recently called up the former British & Irish Lion, Mike Phillips to cover at halfback following an injury to Declan Smith and with Aled and Gareth Davies in the Wales camp to face the Springboks.
Jantjies signed a short term loan deal with the team for Saturday’s clash in the City of Roses. Craig Barry who debuted for the Cheetahs during last weeks win over Edinburgh and who is also expected to start this week, recently still played alongside Jantjies earlier in the season for Western Province.
The coach, Wayne Pivac, said they had to think on their feet due to the injuries.
“We’ve had to be creative and think outside the box with our halfbacks on this tour.”
The side from Llanelli will however receive major boast with the ever impressive backrower, James Davies, set to make is return from a shoulder injury he sustained in the opening rounds of the Pro14.
Both the Cheetahs and Scarlets will be naming their sides for the clash in the Toyota Stadium on Friday afternoon. – MORGAN PIEK
