Police in the Free State are investigating a case of land invasion after community members at Phase 4 in Bloemspruit in Mangaung erected temporary structures on munincipal property last night.
Provincial head of police, Sam Makhele, says community members who tried to erect structures were removed this morning. He says there were intervention by die Provincial Commissioner, Thabethe Mpembe, who visited the area.
According to him no arrests were made. At this stage police cannot say there is a serious land invasion, but the Mangaung Metro reported a case at the Bloemspruit police station.
According to him police will wait until more statements have been obtained to finalise its investigation. He says the election process was not affected by die incident.
Makhele says police fortunately acted swiftly to avoid any interruptions at the nearest voting station at the Rekgonne Primary School. He could not confirm if the incident is politically motivated. – Christal-lize Muller
