Lightening strikes and kill three in Free State

Three males between the ages of 12 and 35 were struck and killed by lightening in separate incidents in various parts of the Free State during Thursday’s rain and thunder storms.

According to Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Sipho Towa, on Thursday at around pm the EMS crew received an alert of the first incident where two male students from Phaphano School in Section A from Botshabelo were struck by lightning, with one of them suffering fatal injuries to the head and other parts of his body.

Towa says the young male was declared dead upon EMS’s arrival, however, his friend was rushed to Botshabelo Hospital for observation and treatment.

In another separate incident, about thirty minutes thereafter, the crew were informed of another lightning strike where one twelve-year-old scholar was struck by lightning in Bloemfontein East School in Khayelitsha, a township in the city.

The minor was unfortunately declared dead on arrival at the scene. In a third lightning incident, a 35 year old male was struck and instantly killed by lightning in Nyakallong, near Allanridge, and according to reports, he suffered injuries similar to the scholar who died in the first incident.
