The Free State Health MEC, Butana Kompela, has expressed his shock at yesterday’s accident and sent his condolences to the family.

Kompela said “We appreciate the efforts taken by the Road Traffic Officers and other safety road stakeholders in curing the carnage on our roads”.

Provincial Health HOD, David Motau, MEC for Police, Roads and Transport Sam Mashinini also send their messages of condolences to the families affected. Mashinini made a call to all road users to adhere to road regulations.

Mashinini also said each and every one ought to take a responsibility for their lives on the roads and not just leave it to the drivers of the vehicles.

As it stands, many of the families are yet to be identified and According to Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Tammy Marwick, police forensics will take DNA samples from the bodies of the deceased in efforts to identify them as many of them were burnt beyond recognition.

The cause for the accident or why the taxi burnt remains unknown and forms part of ongoing investigations.
