The Free State ANC Youth League has publicly stated that former African Union (AU) commission chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, will be the right woman to be the next president.
In an interview with ENCA on Sunday, provincial spokesperson Sello Pietersen said the address Dlamini-Zuma gave at the Cadre’s Forum last week at Sasolburg displayed her impressive understanding of geopolitical matters in the country and on the continent.
“We acknowledge that the ANC has not opened up discussions, but when that time comes, we are saying as the Youth League in the province, we are not going to be hesitant. We will support her candidature for being the President of the ANC.”
The youth structure also stated that said it was time the country was led by a woman and they support the former AU Chairperson for the role of President not only because of her gender but also her impressive track record within the party.
ANC Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe, has previously warned ANC structures of entering into a succession debate ahead of time.
However, Pietersen says as the ANC is the league’s mother body, Mantashe’s statements will be respected but the statements by the league should not be taken as declarations of who they believe will succeed Zuma but are rather “expressions of intention” to support Dlamini-Zuma should she vie for the presidential seat.
Dlamini-Zuma is expected to go head-to-head with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa during the elective conference in December.
