A fatal accident at Harmony’s Phakisa mine in Welkom has brought operations at the mine to a halt.
This follows after a miner at the mine was killed in a rail-bound equipment accident that happened underground this morning.
Harmony’s Marian van der Walt says the accident happened in the early hours of the morning and no other fatalities or injuries were reported.
“We are deeply saddened by the accident and wish to express our condolences to the family. As we speak a management team together with the department of mineral resources are underground to investigate what the causes of the accident were,” she said.
Van der Walt mentioned that a team consisting out of mine management and officials of the Department of Mineral Resources are currently underground to investigate the circumstances that lead to accident.
“When there is a fatality we stop the mine and the department would most likely issue a section 54 – which order the mine to stop until the company can convince them the area is safe to reopen the mine.”
