5km Funwalk - UFS No Student Hungry 1000/33 Stride

Sports event

Area: Bloemfontein
Start: 15:55 (GMT+2), Thu, 10 April 2014
End: 14:00 (GMT+2), Thu, 01 May 2014
Venue: University of the Free State, Main Campus, Main Building

‘How do you eat an elephant?’ ‘One bite at a time’. We all know the saying, but we don’t always apply the adage in our own lives. In order to ensure that needy students do not study on an empty stomach, the No Student Hungry bursary programme (NSH) continues to play an important role in the lives of more than 100 students at the University of the Free State (UFS). On 1 May 2014, a volunteer team will cover more than 1 000 kilometres in approximately 33 days to create awareness of and raise funds for this human project. The team will depart from Bloemfontein on 1 May 2014 and walk all the way to Cape Town during the hours 06:00 - 18:00 every day. According to Adéle van Aswegen, she regularly meets financially distressed students who cannot even afford one meal per day. Therefore, she decided to walk for this cause to show her support for the NSH campaign. “We expect to arrive in Cape Town on 2 June 2014”, said Ntokozo Nkabinde, one of the coordinators of the walk project. NSH was started in 2011 by Prof. Jonathan Jansen, Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the University of the Free State, and Mr Rudi Buys, Dean of Student Affairs. By offering students a small daily allowance, the NSH project aims to alleviate food insecurity among students at the UFS in order to significantly enhance their chances of completing their studies. The bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need, good academic performance, active participation in student life programmes and commitment to serving the community. This initiative has been changing the lives of students at the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa Campuses, and it will be launched at the South Campus this April. “We are planning a big send-off for our walk team on 1 May. Join us on the Bloemfontein Campus for a 5 km fun walk, with exhibitors and entertainment. Tickets are available at R20 each and lots of prizes can be won”, said Vicky Simpson, NSH programme coordinator. NSH would like to thank Adéle van Aswegen, Ntokozo Nkabinde, Nico Piedt, Ronél Warner and all the guesthouses along the route, as well as the businesses that have made donations in support of this project. If you are interested in joining the team, would like to take part in the 5km fun walk or if you would like to get involved in any other way, please contact Vicky Simpson at 051-401 7197 or simpsonvz@ufs.ac.za.

HARMONIC BRASS MUNICH back by popular demand!

Music

Area: Bloemfontein

End: 21:00 (GMT+2), Sat, 17 May 2014
Venue: Odeion School of Music (Odeion Auditorium)

HARMONIC BRASS MUNICH German brass quintet back in Bloemfontein by popular demand! “Fenominale koperkwintet meng virtuose spel met gemoedelikheid” - Elretha Britz (Volksblad, 8 March 2012) After the five gentlemen of Harmonic Brass Munich’s visit to Bloemfontein in 2012, concert goers could not stop talking about the extraordinary and highly entertaining concert they were treated with. The OSM could not let the chance go by to invite them to Bloemfontein with their next SA tour. These unbelievable musicians will again baffle concert goers with works from Puccini’s well known “Nessun Dorma” to Ravel’s “Bolero” and the “Duet of the Flowers” from the opera Lakmè by Delibes. Since 1991, the Harmonic Brass Munich has been renowned for its big, elegant brass sound. Carnegie Hall (New York), Arts Center (Seoul), Leipzig Gewandhaus: the five gentlemen are welcomed and feel at home everywhere in the world. Harmonic Brass travels around the globe playing around 120 concerts a year with changing programmes. An ensemble that spreads good humor: meticulous filing at their performance combined with baroque joie de vivre, serious musical work alternating with giggling boyishness. Five individuals, who couldn't be more unequal, melt to a unity on stage that is hardly ever to be met. Harmonic Brass is supported by an incredibly large number of fans. For the Goethe Institute Harmonic Brass has since 2000 been a cultural ambassador all over the world and the musicians from Munich also hold numerous international workshops. Whoever has been to a Harmonic Brass concert knows what the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” means when writing about an ensemble that "… with its glamorous-virtuous way of performing is one of the best of its kind worldwide." Hans Zellner (trumpet) studied with Prof Lachenmaier, Rolf Quinque and Wolfgang Guggenberger at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich as well as the Hochschule für Musik und Theater also in Munich. Gergely Lukács (trumpet) studied with Prof Károly Neumayer, Prof István Palotai and Prof Zoltán Szücs at the Franz-List Music Academy in Budapest as well as with Prof Reinhold Friedrich at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe. Andreas Binder (French horn) studied with Prof Siegfried Hammer and Prof Wolfgang Gaag at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Thomas Lux (trombone) studied with Prof. Paul Schreckenberger at the Staatl. Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim. Manfred Häberlein (tuba) studied at the Meistersinger-Conservatory in Nürnberg and with Tom Walsh at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich. PROGRAMME: Georg Friedrich Händel: Ouverture from Music for the Royal Fireworks Johann Sebastian Bach: Fugue in G minor Léo Delibes: Duet of the Flowers from the opera Lakmè Maurice Ravel: Bolero Giacomo Puccini: Nessun Dorma from the opera Turandot Georges Bizet: Carmen Karl Jenkins: Palladio Leonard Bernstein: West Side Story Bastian Pusch: Tarantella Astor Piazzolla: Libertango Zequinha de Abreu: Tico Tico (arrangements by Hans Zellner) ADMISSION: R130 (adults) R90 (pensioners, students and learners) R70 (UFS staff) R50 (group bookings of 10+) Tickets available at Computicket. NETTIE IMMELMAN MEMORIAL CONCERT with Ruth Goveia (piano) and the Odeion String Quartet Legendary piano teacher, Nettie Immelman, passed away in 2011 and the Odeion School of Music presented the first memorial concert in her honour during 2012. Jeanne-Minette Cilliers, celebrated pianist and former pupil of Immelman, was the obvious choice of a celebrated pianist to be invited to perform in this first concert. Pianist Nicol Viljoen performed in the second memorial concert. With the third memorial concert the newly appointed piano lecturer at the OSM, Prof Ruth Goveia and the Odeion String Quartet will perform. Ruth will perform solo piano works by Debussy and Chopin in the first half of the programme, followed by the Schumann Piano Quintet, Op. 44 together with the Odeion String Quartet in the second half. Ruth Goveia obtained her BMus (Ed) degree from the University of the Free State and her DMus from the Jacobs Music School at the University of Indiana (USA). Her piano teachers and mentors include distinguished pianists like Edmund Battersby, Géla Siki, Frank Weinstock and Nils Kayser. Ruth served as adjunct professor of piano at the Albion College (Michigan) and visiting professor at Indiana University. She also held a senior lector position for several years at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and at the Department of Music at the University of Pretoria. She has performed as soloist with most SA orchestras as well as at American universities. The OSQ (with members Samson Diamond, Sharon de Kock, Jeanne-Louise Moolman and Anmari van der Westhuizen) is a flagship of the UFS and symbolizes the university’s commitment to the arts. The quartet was established in 1991 as a permanent full-time resident string quartet. The quartet performs regularly to critical acclaim in all the major music centres in South Africa as well as in Zimbabwe and Zambia. The OSQ was recently nominated for the Kanna award for Best Classical Music Performance at the 2014 Absa KKNK. In November 2013 they recorded a CD which will be released in May 2014.
