Expectations that the new Free State Health MEC Butana Komphela is going to release details about the controversial stem cell treatment at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, were dashed yesterday.
Komphela was however not present during the first sitting of the Free State Legislature after the reshuffling of the provincial cabinet. He was appointed as the MEC for health amid news headlines about the treatment.
The Medicines Control Council (MCC) indicated that it suspended the treatment what appears to be unlawful stem cell experimentation. A question on the details of the treatment and the multi million rand contract was listed to be answered during a oral question session in legislature yesterday, but former Health MEC Benny Malakoane indicated that he did submit a written answer on this question before the reshuffling and should reach the DA soon.
DA MPL David van Vuuren then indicated that he will accept a written reply.
