Dam levels in the Free State are still low, even though rain was welcomed around parts of the Free State in the past week with no considerable impact on dams.
Currently the water level at Rustfontein Dam is at 29% as compared to last week’s 29.74%. The largest dam in South Africa, the Gariep Dam, is at 49.1% as compared to last week’s 47.08% – just a slight level up. Vanderkloof Dam is currently at 53.19%, compared to 52.59% last week.
The Erfenis Dam is at 43.47% compared to last week’s 43.95%, with a slight decrease in its dam level percentage. The Krugersdrift Dam remained at 16.88%, the same as last week. The Sterkfontein Dam is at 86.96% compared to 87.05 last week. The Bloemhof Dam is at 34.98%, compared to 31.54% last week the same time.
Both the community and the agricultural sector should continue adhering to water restrictions set out by different municipalities. Adherence to water restrictions by domestic users and industries is impacting positively by releasing strains on water resources and demand management during this trying time of drought.
The Department of Water and Sanitation continues to work around the clock, monitoring 211 dams on a weekly basis.
