A Crime Intelligence officer from Bloemfontein is expected to appear in the local Magistrate’s Court today in connection with corruption and extortion. Provincial Hawks spokesperson, S’fiso Nyakane, says a 39-year-old warrant officer was arrested at his office in the city on Tuesday following an extensive investigation by the Hawks Anti-Corruption Unit and members from the national Crime Intelligence Unit.
He says in March this year the suspect allegedly paid a police informant with R9 000 for services rendered. The suspect later demanded R5 500 from the same amount he paid to the involved informant, allegedly telling him the R5 500 was intended for another informant detained at Grootvlei Correctional Services. According to Nyakane informer reported the matter to the Hawks for investigation. “It was discovered during the investigation that the suspect indeed extorted money from the informer previously in many other instances,“says Nyakane. – Christal-Lize Muller
