Earlier this afternoon, 8 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members were shot with rubber bullets and 3 badly injured at the Hendrina Power Station.
According to NUM’s acting national spokesperson, Livhuwani Mammburu, the 8 members were shot by the police while they were protesting peacefully.
Mammburu says protesters were allegedly provoked by the police and the union will therefore take legal steps.
NUM demand that Eskom increases its lowest paid employees’ salary with 10% and 8.5% for the highest paid employees. They also demand a housing allowance of R3 000.
“We can confirm that our members were short by the police, and because it was not a violent demonstration we are going to consult with our legal team on this matter” says Mammburu. – Katleho Morapela/Courant News
