Alleged money laundering duo appear in court

The 25-year-old, Baig Mahomed and 50-year-old, Mahomed Hoosen appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 16 February 2017.

They were charged for possession of suspected stolen money or proceeds of crime in connection with the total of over R21.1 million recovered in Bloemfontein airport on Tuesday, 14 February 2017. 12 million of the money was in US Dollars while the rest was in South African notes.

The Hawks, along with the police, swiftly acted on information about the duo that had four big travelling bags full of cash notes. They were intercepted by the police at the Airport before catching a flight to Cape Town.

Preliminary investigation revealed that they drove from Durban to Bloemfontein prior their arrested. Furthermore, it was established that Baig Mahomed had a previous conviction for possession of dagga in 2010.

The case against the duo has been postponed to 21 February 2017 for bail application and they remain in police custody.
