Ernst Stapelberg will be making his Toyota Free State Cheetahs debut on Saturday when the team tackles Western Province at Newlands in the Currie Cup.
After arriving at the Cheetahs last month, the player was side-lined immediately and had to undergo surgery to threat appendicitis.
Stapelberg will be starting at flyhalf in the match, while the coach Daan Human opted to retain the exciting flanker, Daniel Maartens, on the bench.
Human told Courant that after Saturday’s game everybody will know who Stapelberg is.
“I’m glad you know his name because he is going to be good on Saturday, I tell you that,” said the former Springbok prop.
“Ernst comes into the team with a lot of confidence, he looks like he has been training with the team for the past 10 months.
“He just stepped in and he is running the show in the back, so I’m very glad he is the side.
“I think Ryno Eksteen will also add a lot of value in the game, especially when it opens up, because he is a very attacking flyhalf and I think he has a lot of qualities as well.”
Another player who will be looking to impress of the flank Daniel Maartens, who stole the show at Kings’ Park last week. Daniel Maartens resembles the former Springbok Heinrich Brussow in the way he plays and on top of that he has an extra dash of speed.
One cannot help but to feel that he is knocking on the door to play in the Guinness Pro14 with the big boys.
Human believes that Maartens will have that same influence at Newlands.
“He probably had the biggest influence on the game, and I believe that Fifi Rampeta will have that same impact.
“The ideal would be to have both of them on the field and slow down the Province ball and that would be ideal for us, which will give us more time on defense and allow us to be more accurate on defense.”
