By-election in Sasolburg peaceful

The municipal by-election in the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, which includes Sasolburg, started without incident this morning.
The election in Ward 12 comes after the resignation of an ANC councillor. The by-election is being fiercely contested by the ANC, DA and EFF and will have a major impact on how the municipality is run in future.

Metsimaholo was run by a DA and MCA – Metsimaholo Community Association – coalition following last year’s election in which the ANC won 19 seats, DA got 12 seats, the EFF eight, the MCA two, and the FF Plus one. The ANC seats were reduced to 18 after the resignation of the councillor.

The Independent Electoral Commission’s Charmaine Mabale says the two voting stations in the ward opened on time this morning and no incidents have been reported. “Eight political parties registered. Yesterday we had special votes. One 120 of 190 voters who registered for special votes cast their votes yesterday.” – Cathy Dlodlo
