Free State Government warns of bursary application scam

The Free State Provincial government has warned the public against a fake bursary and scholarship notice making rounds on social media.

The Provincial government says it is aware of the notice in which requests learners from the class of 2016 needing funding to further their tertiary education to send through their names, ID numbers, student numbers and home addresses via SMS to to 079 287 3720.
Free State Premier, Ace Magashule, dismissed these social media posts and said it is a hoax in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“As the Free State Government, we have procedures, requirements and proper channels that we follow when awarding bursaries and scholarships to the candidates. Therefore, people are urged to be vigilant of such scam. We would never ask for a fee or a certain amount of money in order for us to grant learners/ students bursaries. We urge media houses to also assist us in spreading the word and help us to bring these crooks to book,” Magashule said.
