SARS Customs officials discovered 6 boxes of 80 000 Viagra pills worth R8-million at the OR Tambo International Airport yesterday.
The drugs, which are valued at R7 921 200, were part of a possible counterfeit footwear shipment that was detained on 25 September 2016.
The inspection found 79 212 Viagra pills with 3000 Adidas shoes. The goods were detained and will be handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation.
SARS spokesperson, Sandile Memela, applauded the customs unit for this discovery and said the bust spoke to the tight security at entry points into the country. Memela also added that no arrests have been made.
Kempton Park SAPS said they were not yet able to comment as investigations are still under way. This bust follows after another in July 2015 at OR Tambo when 40 000 Viagra tablets that were falsely labelled as “plastic toys”, were also discovered.
