A 28-year-old male accused of rape and robbery was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday at the Brits Magistrates’ Court.
The sentencing comes after the accused raped and robbed a 52-year-old woman of her cell phone on 15 December 2014, at Letlhabile location near Brits.
According to police spokesperson, Kelebogile Moleko, at the time of the incident, the victim was on her way from home to her workplace when the accused pulled her to the bushes. The accused, who also carried with him an illegal firearm, then threatened the victim with a knife and raped her in the bushes.
The victim then reported the incident to the police and the accused was arrested on 03 January 2015.
Charges faced by the 28-year-old accused included robbery, possession of an illegal firearm and rape. Moleko said that the sentencing was welcomed and proved the severity of the charges brought against the accused.
